Do I always have to pay for a cabin bag on low-cost carriers?

Not always. Southwest, JetBlue and AirAsia include the wheeled cabin bag. Ryanair, Wizz Air, easyJet and Spirit typically charge for it, so you get only a small personal item unless you pay.

How much do checked bags cost on low-cost carriers?

20 to 80 dollars per bag, depending on route, weight and how far in advance you buy. Airport rates can double online rates, and gate check-in even more.

Can I bring a big personal item?

Depends on the airline. Ryanair caps personal items at 40 x 20 x 25 cm, smaller than a typical backpack. Southwest is more forgiving. Measure your bag before you show up at the gate.
